Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring has announced that funding is available through the Specialty Crop Block Grant program for teachers in North Dakota. Teachers in grades 3-5 can apply for SunButter kits to incorporate a hands-on STEM learning opportunity into their classroom curriculum.
These kits allow students to learn about two key North Dakota commodities—sunflowers and honey—while also making homemade sunflower seed butter and tasting commercial SunButter products.
“The North Dakota Department of Agriculture is seeking teachers interested in bringing this STEM learning opportunity into their classrooms,” Goehring said. Students will gain insights into sunflower and honey production, with North Dakota being the leading producer of both in the nation.
Teachers who wish to receive SunButter kits can visit the official website for more information and submit an application. Applications are due electronically by Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Kits will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis, as supplies are limited. Successful applicants will be notified via email once their request is approved.
This initiative not only enhances STEM education in the classroom but also fosters a deeper understanding of the agricultural industry and its significance to North Dakota.
