How to Grow Strawberries at Home

How to Grow Strawberries at Home

By Scout Nelson

Carrie Knutson, a Horticulture agent, with NDSU Extension in Grand Forks County, shares simple and useful tips for growing strawberries at home. Strawberries are a favorite fruit for many families and growing them in your own garden can be a rewarding experience. However, they require proper care and attention to grow well.

There are three main types of strawberries: June-bearing, everbearing, and day-neutral. June-bearing plants produce one large crop in early summer. Everbearing plants give two harvests, one in early summer and another in fall. Day-neutral types produce fruit throughout most of the growing season. Choosing the right type depends on whether you want a large harvest at once or a steady supply for snacking.

Strawberries grow best in full sun, needing at least 6-10 hours of direct sunlight each day. They should be planted in well-drained soil to prevent water buildup. It is also important to choose a location away from large trees and shrubs, which can create shade and compete for nutrients. Testing the soil before planting helps determine if nutrients are needed. Adding compost can improve soil quality and support plant growth.

Plants should be spaced 18-24 inches apart, with rows about 3-4 feet apart. The crown of the plant must stay at the soil surface, while the roots remain fully covered. Proper watering is also important. Strawberries need about one inch of water per week, and watering in the morning helps reduce disease risks.

Weeds are the main challenge in growing strawberries. Because the plants have shallow roots, careful hand weeding is best. Adding mulch helps control weeds, retain moisture, and reduce disease. Removing flowers early helps plants grow stronger roots, which leads to better fruit later.

In colder areas, protecting plants is essential. Applying mulch after the first frost helps protect the crown from cold damage. With proper care, strawberries can grow well and provide fresh, delicious fruit throughout the season.
