Rural leadership North Dakota celebrates two decades of impact

By Scout Nelson

Rural Leadership North Dakota (RLND), a program by NDSU, recently hosted a graduation gala at the Ramada Bismarck Hotel, celebrating the journey of their ninth class and two decades of leadership excellence. Over the past 20 years, RLND has developed 192 leaders who have significantly contributed to rural North Dakota's agricultural and community sectors.

This year's class, affected by global events, completed their program in four years instead of the usual 18 months. Their motto, "Navigating change together with impact, through self-awareness and service to the community, and with a collective commitment to connection," reflects their resilience and dedication.

Katie Tyler, an NDSU Extension specialist and RLND program director, highlighted the class's achievements. Lynette Flage, associate director of NDSU Extension, also acknowledged their efforts, encouraging them to continue their positive community impact. Each graduate was honored with a plaque featuring their class motto.

Significant awards were presented during the gala. Cory McCaskey from Class V received the Eagle Award for his dedication to the RLND program and its alumni foundation. Marie Hvidsten, the emeritus director of RLND, was honored with the RLND Leaders Award for her exceptional leadership, exemplified through the principles from the book “The Leadership Challenge.”

The RLND Council recognized the CHS Foundation with the RLND Champion Award for their substantial contributions to the program, aiding in developing future agricultural leaders.

The gala successfully raised over $3,000 for the RLND Alumni Association, which funds projects led by RLND alumni, further strengthening rural North Dakota.
