NRCS staff attended a recent NDSU workshop on prescribed burning and grazing brought together conservation experts, researchers, and landowners to discuss the benefits of controlled fires in land management. Held on February 25, the event focused on how prescribed burns improve ecosystem health, enhance forage quality, and support livestock performance.
Unlike wildfires, which occur under extreme conditions, prescribed burns are carefully planned based on specific weather and environmental factors. These controlled fires help manage invasive species, promote plant diversity, and maintain healthy landscapes. Participants noted that prescribed burns have low flame heights and move slowly, reducing risks while providing ecological benefits.
Experts shared insights on integrating prescribed burns with grazing to improve wildlife habitat, plant composition, and livestock productivity. The event also provided attendees with an opportunity to discuss challenges and best practices for implementing prescribed fire on rangelands.
Conservation agencies actively support prescribed burns through technical guidance and financial assistance programs. These initiatives help landowners safely use fire as a management tool while ensuring compliance with conservation standards.
“NRCS supports prescribed fire efforts through comprehensive conservation practice standards, technical assistance, and financial assistance,” said NRCS State Biologist Curt Bradbury. “By collaborating with partners, we ensure prescribed burns are conducted safely and effectively, ultimately enhancing plant community structure, managing pests, reducing wildfire hazards, and improving wildlife habitat. Our goal is to provide landowners with the tools and knowledge they need to achieve their conservation objectives while maintaining the health and productivity of their land.”
Key Conservation Strategies:
- Prescribed Burning Standards – Guidelines are in place to ensure safe and effective prescribed fire practices.
- Technical Support – Experts assist landowners in planning and executing prescribed burns.
- Financial Assistance – Programs help cover costs related to planning, equipment, and labor.
- Partnerships – Organizations collaborate to promote training and community awareness.
Several organizations are offering training sessions to educate landowners and ranchers on prescribed burning techniques. These sessions will cover fire planning, safety measures, and practical applications.
Training Locations and Dates:
- Medora – March 18
- Bismarck – March 19
- Park River – March 20
- Kindred – March 27
These free sessions will provide hands-on learning opportunities to enhance fire management skills and promote responsible land stewardship.
