NORTH DAKOTA WEATHER

North Dakota’s Warm Winter Garden Escape

North Dakota’s Warm Winter Garden Escape

By Scout Nelson

For garden enthusiasts braving a harsh winter, the Como Conservatory in St. Paul, Minnesota, offers a warm, lush retreat. The Marjorie McNeely Conservatory, established in 1915, features two acres of vibrant gardens under glass, providing a perfect escape for those missing the touch of greenery during the colder months.

Central to the conservatory is its impressive 64-foot-tall glass dome, home to a collection of towering palms that are over a century old. This tropical setting, reminiscent of Miami, allows visitors to momentarily transport themselves to a warmer climate, surrounded by lush foliage and diverse plant life.

The conservatory is not only a place of beauty but also education. The North Garden introduces visitors to the origins of everyday foods and spices. Families can explore how bananas and cocoa grow, learning about these plants from a hands-on perspective. The cocoa tree fascinates many with its pods that are the source of chocolate.

For those interested in prehistoric times, the fern room offers a glimpse into the past. This section features ancient plant species like tree ferns, evoking an era when dinosaurs roamed the Earth. The room's waterfall and high humidity also provide a respite for dry, winter skin.

The conservatory’s bonsai collection, the largest in the region, showcases the intricate art of bonsai, where dwarf trees are meticulously pruned and shaped. This collection pays tribute to the Japanese gardening style, honoring St. Paul's sister city relationship with Nagasaki, Japan.

Concluding a visit with the sunken garden is a must, where a rotating display of shrubs, flowers, and bulbs creates a vibrant spectacle. The winter flower show runs through March 16, followed by the spring exhibit starting March 21.

Adjacent to the conservatory is the Como Zoo, offering more interactive experiences with animals, including amusing encounters like a giraffe sneeze that leaves lasting family memories.

Whether seeking education, inspiration, or simply a break from the cold, the Como Conservatory stands out as a cherished destination, enriching the community and visitors alike with its botanical offerings and serene ambiance.
