At the recent Farm and Ranch Conference held in Bismarck on February 22, 2025, North Dakota farmer Samantha Shephard clinched victory at the NDFB Young Farmer and Rancher Discussion Meet. The event, known for its intellectual exchange of ideas on agricultural topics, highlighted her articulate discussions, earning her a $4,000 prize and an opportunity to compete at the national level in Anaheim, Calif., in 2026.
Shephard, alongside her husband, manages a diverse farm operation in Crystal, North Dakota, growing crops such as potatoes, corn, soybeans, wheat, and edible beans. Their agricultural expertise is complemented by her professional work as a bridal makeup artist, and together they raise two children, demonstrating a balanced family and professional life.
The competition brought together four finalists, each with substantial knowledge and discussion skills on the theme of American agriculture’s evolving landscape and the importance of maintaining a strong Farm Bureau membership. The critical discussion focused on how the Farm Bureau can continue attracting and retaining members from a diverse array of modern agricultural professionals and ranchers.
Joey Bailey, NDFB’s Director of Organizational Development, praised the finalists, "The finalists demonstrated exceptional knowledge and outstanding discussion skills, truly showcasing their passion for agriculture." This commendation underscores the importance of the Discussion Meet as a platform for farmers to express and hone their ideas on future agricultural practices and policies.
The event not only recognized the winner’s achievements but also set the stage for future leaders in agriculture to emerge, ensuring the Farm Bureau remains a vibrant and effective organization. As the agricultural landscape continues to transform, such discussions and the insights they foster are vital for the ongoing success and adaptation of the farming community.
