The North Dakota Department of Agriculture has launched an exciting initiative for elementary school teachers. Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring announced the availability of microgreens kits, aimed at enriching the curriculum for students in grades 1 through 4.
This initiative is designed to blend science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education with practical gardening skills.
Commissioner Goehring expressed enthusiasm about the educational possibilities these kits represent. “The North Dakota Department of Agriculture is seeking teachers interested in bringing this STEM learning opportunity into their classrooms,” Goehring said.
He emphasized the value of teaching young students about plant life cycles and their uses in everyday cooking through engaging, hands-on activities.
The program is open to teachers who wish to introduce their students to the basics of planting and nurturing microgreens—a nutritious and versatile group of young plants. Teachers can apply for the kits by visiting the designated website provided by the North Dakota Department of Agriculture.
The deadline for electronic submissions is February 13, 2025, with notifications of successful applications sent out the following day.
Ineligibility applies to teachers who have previously received a hydroponic tower garden grant to ensure a broad distribution of resources. Questions regarding the application process can be directed to Jenna Nieters, Local Foods Marketing Specialist, at the contact information provided in the announcement.
Selected teachers will have until April 1, 2025, to use these microgreens kits in their classrooms. This initiative not only supports educational growth but also encourages young students to appreciate the science behind agriculture and sustainable living practices.
Through this program, children will gain foundational knowledge about plant growth processes and their significance in our food systems, fostering a connection to the agricultural world from an early age.
