North Dakota 4-H Team Excels

By Scout Nelson

The North Dakota 4-H team, representing Cass County, showcased their consumer decision-making skills at the 2025 4-H Family and Consumer Sciences National Championship held in San Antonio, Texas from January 15-18. This educational event, attended by teams from 13 states, focuses on teaching youth to make informed consumer choices through practical and competitive activities.

This year’s competition categories included athletic wear, dental products, invitations, event venues, fast food, and coffee brewing. Participants were tested on their ability to place class items correctly, provide persuasive oral reasons for their choices, and engage in a collaborative group think activity.

The Cass County team comprised talented members who have committed to refining their skills through regular practice sessions. Their hard work paid off as the team secured the eighth position overall in a highly competitive field. One team member achieved remarkable success by earning the highest individual score nationally and securing top placements in the individual categories of the competition.

Reflecting on the experience, the top scorer mentioned the significant role that teamwork and dedicated preparation played in achieving their goals. The support from the North Dakota 4-H Foundation was also pivotal in enabling their participation at the national level.

The Consumer Decision Making contest is just one of the many developmental opportunities offered by the North Dakota 4-H program, which is part of the NDSU Extension’s youth education efforts. Through such events, 4-H aims to equip young individuals with the skills necessary to excel in diverse settings, from everyday decisions to national competitions.
