North Dakota State University's innovative Bison to the Bakken program has successfully attracted 61 student applications, indicating strong interest in the energy sector's educational opportunities. Scheduled to launch in May, this program will provide 45 students from various disciplines with a comprehensive two-week tour across western North Dakota, focusing on the energy industry and economic development.
The participants will explore key communities such as Minot, Tioga, Williston, and Bismarck, among others, with the itinerary including visits to several major energy facilities currently under finalization.
The trip is designed to cover significant aspects of the energy sector, including oil and gas operations, fracking, pipeline processes, and renewable energy sources like wind energy and biofuels.
“We have been overwhelmed with the response from industry partners across the state. Students are excited to learn more about all aspects of energy production and the lifestyle in western North Dakota," commented Kathryn Birkeland, Ronald and Kaye Olson Dean of the College of Business. Her enthusiasm underscores the program's interdisciplinary appeal, drawing applicants from a variety of academic backgrounds.
In addition to industry tours, the program features engagements with state legislators and includes social and cultural activities to enrich the student experience. This initiative not only aims to educate but also to connect students with professionals and lawmakers, enhancing their understanding and networking within the energy sector.
Financially supported through scholarships and the Economic Diversification Research Funds by the North Dakota Legislature, the program covers all costs including travel and lodging, making it accessible to all participants without the burden of additional expenses.
The Bison to the Bakken initiative is a collaborative effort among NDSU's College of Business, College of Engineering, and College of Agriculture. It exemplifies NDSU’s commitment to its land-grant mission by fostering workforce development and retention within the state’s vital energy sector, preparing students for future challenges and opportunities in this dynamic field.
