NDSU Hosts Program to Boost Cattle Backgrounding Success

NDSU Hosts Program to Boost Cattle Backgrounding Success

By Scout Nelson

North Dakota State University’s North Central Research Extension Center in Minot will host a Cattle Backgrounding Program on November 6, 2025, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The event aims to help beef producers make well-informed decisions about incorporating backgrounding into their operations this season.

Backgrounding refers to raising weaned calves on forage or grain-based diets before finishing. This process helps add value, improve feed efficiency, and manage resources effectively. It also provides flexibility for producers facing changing markets and feed conditions.

“Livestock markets, environmental conditions, feed costs and availability fluctuate from year to year and impact the decision of whether or not to background cattle,” says Lacey Quail, NDSU Extension livestock management specialist. “Profitability hinges on many factors, some that can be controlled and many that cannot.”

The program will cover key topics such as backgrounding and finishing budgets, cattle market trends and price outlook, feed rations, cost of gain, calf health, and dry lot management. Participants will also gain insights from recent NDSU Extension research and tools designed to improve efficiency and reduce production risks.

Paige Brummund, NDSU Extension agent in Ward County, said, “Backgrounding can add flexibility and capture more value from a calf crop. This program helps producers understand the economics and nutrition factors that impact success.”

Speakers will include experts from NDSU’s Department of Animal Sciences, Department of Agribusiness and Applied Economics, and both the Carrington and North Central Research Extension Centers.

The program is free to attend, with supper provided, but registration is required. Producers can sign up or find more information at ndsu.ag/cattlebkrnd25, or contact Lacey Quail and Paige Brummund for assistance.
