The Carrington Research Extension Center (CREC) Foundation Seedstock team has announced the 2025 lineup of foundation-grade seed varieties, offering farmers an expanded selection for spring planting. Despite a challenging season marked by 51 rain events, heavy fog, and nearly 18.5 inches of rainfall between April and September, the team successfully managed planting and crop protection activities.
Fieldwork began on April 24, 2025, with seed conditioning now in progress. The new inventory introduces three new varieties — two wheat releases from NDSU’s Dr. Andrew Green and a new barley from SeCan, supported by the North Dakota Crop Improvement and Seed Association (NDCISA).
Among the highlights:
- ND Horizon performs well in eastern North Dakota, matching ND Stampede in yield and protein but featuring shorter height and stronger straw.
- ND Roughrider, adapted for the state’s western region, offers high yield potential in dry conditions.
- CDC Churchill, a new two-row malting barley from Canada, provides strong straw strength, high yield, and low protein.
In addition to these, farmers can access a wide range of barley, durum, field pea, flax, soybean, spring wheat, and winter rye varieties through the program. To obtain NDCISA seed varieties, farmers must be members or associates of the association.
Those interested can contact Carrington REC at 701-652-2951 or reach Dave Copenhaver at 701-652-5853. Additional varieties and quantities may also be available from other Research Extension Centers and the Agronomy Seed Farm.
The NDSU Foundation Seedstocks Pricing Committee is preparing to publish 2026 spring seed prices soon. Farmers are encouraged to place their seed orders by December 1 for priority allocation within the program.
