Fargo Tops North Dakota College Town Ranking

By Scout Nelson

Fargo, home to North Dakota State University (NDSU), has been recognized as the top college town in North Dakota and one of the best in the country. The recognition comes from WalletHub’s 2025 “Best College Towns and Cities in America” report, which ranked more than 400 cities nationwide. Fargo scored an overall 48.82, securing the 30th spot nationally and 11th among midsize cities with a score of 54.45.

The WalletHub study evaluated cities based on three main categories—Wallet Friendliness, Social Environment, and Academic and Economic Opportunities. These categories included 31 detailed factors such as housing affordability, safety, job growth, education quality, and entertainment options.

Fargo performed strongly in all categories, offering students a balance between affordability and opportunity. Its cost of living, reasonable rent prices, and accessible amenities make it an attractive destination for students who want a complete college experience without financial strain.

In the Social Environment category, Fargo scored high for its vibrant downtown area filled with restaurants, coffee shops, art galleries, and music venues. The city provides many ways for students to enjoy social and cultural activities while feeling safe and connected.

The Academic and Economic Opportunities category highlighted Fargo’s growing job market, strong educational institutions, and career potential for graduates. NDSU students benefit from local internships, research collaborations, and employment opportunities that help prepare them for successful careers.

Outdoor activities are also abundant, with Red River trails and local parks providing recreation spaces for students to unwind. This mix of academics, affordability, and lifestyle makes Fargo an ideal place to study and live.

According to the report, Fargo’s success is due to the strong connection between NDSU and the community. “The city’s culture and opportunities reflect a shared spirit of growth and learning,” noted the study. For students, Fargo remains a place where education and community thrive together.
