NDSU Hosts Prairie Palooza Educational Event

NDSU Hosts Prairie Palooza Educational Event

By Scout Nelson

North Dakota State University Extension will host Prairie Palooza on June 16 at the Central Grassland Research Extension Center near Streeter, North Dakota. The educational event celebrates the importance of prairie ecosystems and helps increase awareness about rangeland conservation across the state.

The event is organized in recognition of the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists, designated by the United Nations for 2026. Organizers say rangelands cover about 54% of the world’s land area and nearly 30% of North Dakota. These grasslands support livestock production while also providing important habitat for wildlife and pollinators.

Prairie Palooza is designed as a family-friendly event where participants can learn about prairie plants, soils, birds, insects, and grazing systems. Educational activities will focus on helping visitors better understand how healthy grasslands support agriculture, wildlife, and environmental sustainability.

Youth activities will also be available during the event, including a scavenger hunt designed to teach children about prairie ecosystems in an interactive way. Organizers hope the event encourages young people and families to learn more about conservation and natural resources in North Dakota.

A special session led by Linda and Luke Black Elk will focus on traditional plant knowledge and Native American culture. The presentation will provide information about the historical and cultural connection between people and prairie landscapes.

“Everyone is invited to join us to learn about and enjoy the rangeland ecosystems of North Dakota,” says Kevin Sedivec, NDSU Extension rangeland management specialist and interim director of the Central Grassland Research Extension Center.

The event begins at 1 p.m. Central Time with an optional birding tour. The main activities will take place from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and include dinner for participants. Attendance is free, but organizers request registration to help with planning.

Additional event information and registration details are available through NDSU Extension. Participants may also contact Benjamin Menapace at 810-618-1550 or benjamin.menapace@ndsu.edu.
