NDSU hosts diverse horticulture field day

By Scout Nelson

The North Dakota State University Department of Plant Sciences is preparing to host a comprehensive field day on September 5, focusing on various horticultural research topics. This event, set to take place at the NDSU Horticulture Research Farm and Arboretum near Amenia and Absaraka, North Dakota, promises an insightful peek into groundbreaking agricultural studies.

Starting at 4 p.m., the field day organized by Professor Harlene Hatterman-Valenti will present an array of research projects. Attendees will explore the latest advancements in fruit, hemp, vegetable, and woody plant cultivation.

Specific topics include innovations in grape and juneberry breeding, high tunnel tomato production, and the development of new brassica cultivars aimed at enhancing yield and stress tolerance. Additionally, participants will learn about hydro-mulching as an effective weed control strategy and the potential of various garlic cultivars.

The event also features studies on apples suitable for fresh consumption and hard cider production, alongside pioneering floral hemp research. These presentations aim to offer practical insights for gardeners, orchardists, and farmers interested in adopting these innovations.

For those interested in dining during the event, a boxed dinner will be available at 6:30 p.m., requiring prior registration by September 2. Attendees are encouraged to visit the provided link to secure their meal and to find detailed driving directions to the venue.

This field day not only highlights NDSU's commitment to advancing horticultural science but also provides a valuable networking and learning opportunity for the agricultural community. For more information and to register, interested parties can visit NDSU’s event page.
