The North Dakota State University (NDSU) Department of Plant Sciences Woody Plant Improvement Team will host an educational event on Saturday, September 6, 2025. The program, called Branch Out: The NDSU Arboretum Experience, will take place at the Dale E. Herman Research Arboretum from 11:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Located between Absaraka and Amenia, North Dakota, the arboretum is home to the state’s largest collection of trees and shrubs. The 35-acre site contains more than 5,000 species, cultivars, and selections, making it a valuable resource for research and education. The event provides a unique chance to explore this impressive collection and learn about plant research that supports the Northern Great Plains.
The day will begin with a guided trailer tour of the arboretum, followed by a keynote presentation from Joe Bergeson, owner of Bergeson Nursery in Minnesota. His session, Shrubs for Homeowners, will offer practical advice for enhancing home landscapes while attendees enjoy a boxed lunch.
NDSU faculty and researchers will lead walking tours, including Dr. Todd West’s tour on tree options to replace ash trees threatened by emerald ash borer, and Connor Hagemeyer’s tour featuring NDSU tree releases suited for regional landscapes.
Presentations will also cover fall landscape care, pruning shrubs, building rain barrels, and choosing certified arborists. Learning stations will focus on topics such as tree planting, pruning, turf care, iron chlorosis, and stump removal.
NDSU Extension Master Gardeners will be available to diagnose plant problems, with visitors encouraged to bring photos or samples for review.
This event highlights NDSU’s mission to introduce trees and shrubs that thrive in challenging climates, while offering valuable information to homeowners, students, and professionals interested in sustainable landscapes.
