As the sun rises over Skull Creek Bison Ranch in North Dakota, Conner Buchholz sees both legacy and opportunity. A 2022 graduate of North Dakota State University (NDSU), Buchholz now plays a key role in the state’s agriculture industry. He serves as co-owner and board member of North American Bison, the largest USDA-certified bison processing plant in North Dakota. His journey from a family ranch to business leadership reflects how agriculture continues to evolve in the region.
Buchholz’s path to success started with a bold decision — leaving his ranch for college. As a first-generation college student, stepping away from familiar surroundings wasn’t easy. However, attending NDSU proved life changing. The university’s strong focus on agriculture and business inspired him to pursue a management degree with a minor in animal science. Scholarships made his education affordable, but Buchholz says the real value came from the skills and experiences he gained.
Today, Buchholz uses his business knowledge to lead North American Bison. He manages operations and works closely with bison producers across North Dakota, Montana, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Canada. His leadership helps connect family ranches with national retailers, delivering high-quality bison meat across the country.
Buchholz praises NDSU for teaching him essential skills like financial planning, conflict resolution, and leadership. He also values the professors who brought real-world industry experience to the classroom.
While expanding his business, Buchholz remains dedicated to his family Skull Creek Ranch, founded in 1939. He believes the bison industry can play a bigger role in North Dakota’s economy. His goal is to add more value within the state by turning raw products into finished goods and boosting rural economies.
