Maximize Wheat Profits with Smart Variety Choices

Maximize Wheat Profits with Smart Variety Choices

By Jamie Martin

Wheat growers planning for the 2026 season should look beyond yield when choosing varieties. Grain quality traits can have a major impact on market opportunities and overall profitability.

A key consideration is resistance to Fusarium Head Blight, often called head scab. This disease can lower grain quality and lead to increased vomitoxin levels. Choosing varieties with stronger resistance remains one of the most effective ways to reduce losses and protect grain value. Disease-resistant varieties are particularly important where crop residue remains on the soil surface after planting.

Falling numbers are another important quality measurement. It reflects how wheat flour performs during processing and baking. While weather before harvest can affect results, studies have shown that variety of genetics also plays a role. Some wheat varieties maintain acceptable falling number values better than others during challenging weather conditions.

Farmers should also consider testing weight when reviewing a variety of options. Varieties that consistently deliver strong grain quality may be better suited for premium markets. Access to quality data can help growers identify varieties that meet the needs of millers and food manufacturers.

Economics should also be part of the decision-making process. Higher-yielding feed of wheat does not always generate greater returns than milling wheat. Quality premiums can allow lower-yielding milling wheat to compete with or exceed the value of higher-yielding feed wheat. As a result, growers may benefit from prioritizing quality traits alongside yield potential.
