NDFU hosts farm transition events

By Scout Nelson

North Dakota Farmers Union (NDFU) and NDSU Extension are set to host two one-day workshops dedicated to farm succession planning. These educational sessions are slated for Jamestown and Minot, focusing on the transfer of farm ownership to future generations.
The first workshop will take place at the NDFU State Headquarters in Jamestown on January 30, followed by a second session in Minot at the North Central Research Extension Center on March 4.

Mark Watne, President of NDFU, emphasizes the importance of these discussions: “There comes a time when all farm families need to have a conversation about how the farm or ranch will be transferred to the next generation or have assets divided.” He notes that the workshops, titled “Design Your Succession Plan,” are crucial for initiating and sustaining these essential family discussions.

Participants will gain insights on starting these critical conversations and drafting a preliminary succession plan. The workshops also provide guidance on selecting and collaborating with legal and financial professionals to craft a feasible plan.

Each workshop will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., including a complimentary lunch. However, space is limited. Prospective attendees are encouraged to register early through the NDFU website or its dedicated app.

The registration deadlines are January 23 for the Jamestown workshop and February 25 for the Minot workshop. For additional details or to register, interested parties can contact NDFU directly.

These sessions represent an invaluable opportunity for farm owners to ensure a smooth and structured transition of their life’s work to the next generation.
