ND Pesticide Course Boosts Farm Safety Skills

ND Pesticide Course Boosts Farm Safety Skills

By Scout Nelson

Private applicators across North Dakota have an important responsibility when they use or handle pesticides on farms, ranches, and rural properties. To meet state and federal rules, individuals who work with restricted-use pesticides must complete a certification process.

This requirement helps protect people, crops, and the environment by making sure pesticide users understand safety rules and proper application techniques.

A Private Applicator Pesticide Certification Training is scheduled for January 22, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Mooreton Community Center in Mooreton, North Dakota. Additional dates are available for those who cannot attend the first session.

The training is designed to help participants understand the laws and guidelines they must follow when using restricted-use pesticides, also known as RUPs.

The certification is required by the Environmental Protection Agency and the North Dakota Pesticide Act. Anyone who sells, buys, or uses RUPs must hold a valid certification. The training covers topics such as pesticide labels, safety equipment, storage, environmental protection, and handling methods. These lessons help reduce risks to people, wildlife, water, and crops.

To keep certification active, private applicators must renew it every three years. They can do this by taking a 60-question monitored exam or by attending a re-certification training session. These options help ensure applicators stay updated on new rules, improved safety practices, and changes in chemical use.

The event contact is Lacy Christopher, who can provide more information or answer questions. Anyone who needs disability accommodations is encouraged to make requests at least two weeks before the event.

Pesticide certification programs are an important part of safe farm management. They help protect workers, families, and communities while supporting responsible pesticide use in agriculture. Through regular training, applicators learn how to use chemicals carefully, prevent accidents, and protect natural resources.

This training gives North Dakota applicators the knowledge they need to follow the law and support safe and productive farm operations.
