Life-saving skills - Stop the Bleed training in Cavalier County

Life-saving skills - Stop the Bleed training in Cavalier County

By Scout Nelson

On January 17, 2024, the Langdon Courthouse in Cavalier County will host a critical first-aid training session called 'Stop the Bleed,' from 12 to 1:30 pm Central.  This event, a joint effort by NDSU Extension and the NDSU School of Nursing, aims to educate rural residents on how to control bleeding in emergency situations.

The importance of this training is underscored by the fact that 40% of trauma-related deaths worldwide are due to uncontrolled bleeding, and the average time for a first responder to arrive is 7-10 minutes.  With the average person capable of bleeding out in 3-5 minutes, these skills are crucial.

Participants, limited to 10-12 per session and aged 13 and above, will learn three key techniques: using hands to apply pressure to a wound, packing a wound, and correctly applying a tourniquet.  These skills are not only lifesaving but also empowering for individuals in emergency scenarios.

Emergency management personnel attending this training may qualify for National Continuing Competency Requirement (NCCR) and Local Continuing Competency Requirement (LCCR) units.  They may also become eligible to become certified Stop the Bleed instructors in their communities.

Personal Stop the Bleed kits will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information or to register for this essential training, contact Bailey Reiser at bailey.reiser@ndsu.edu or call 701-256-2560. This training is not just an opportunity to learn; it's a chance to potentially save lives.
