The North Dakota Department of Agriculture (NDDA) has announced that funding is now available for honey bee research aimed at improving colony health and management.
Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring said the department is seeking research proposals that can deliver practical and science-based solutions to the challenges facing beekeepers across the state.
Researchers are encouraged to submit proposals focused on five key priorities: Varroa mites, nutrition, genetics and breeding, Tropilaelaps mites, and Nosema. Each of these issues plays a critical role in maintaining the long-term sustainability of honey bee populations, which are essential for crop pollination and food production.
“The North Dakota Department of Agriculture is seeking grant proposals for research into finding practical solutions to honey bee health and management concerns,” he said.
Multiple grants may be awarded, and the department will consider proposals that fund full or partial projects, as well as those that expand on previous research efforts. The goal is to build a stronger understanding of honey bee biology and disease control through collaborative studies that deliver real-world results for producers.
Applicants can find detailed application instructions on the NDDA website at www.ndda.nd.gov/honey-bee-research-and-promotion-grants. All proposals must be received by December 1, 2025, at 4 p.m. CT.
For additional information or assistance with the application process, interested researchers can contact Samantha Brunner at 701-328-4765 or via email at sbrunner@nd.gov.
