Agriculture plays a vital role in the state’s economy, and the Agriculture Hall of Fame has recognized dedicated individuals since 1997. This year, Sarah Vogel of Bismarck is among the esteemed inductees.
Vogel has had a remarkable career as an author, lawyer, and former agriculture commissioner. In 1988, she made history as the first woman in the U.S. to serve as an agriculture commissioner. During the 1980s farm crisis, she played a key role in supporting farmers at risk of foreclosure, using her legal expertise to advocate for their rights.
Although she did not come from a traditional agricultural background, her education and experiences led her to champion the interests of farmers and ranchers. Vogel credits her legal knowledge, consumer protection experience, and understanding of the Nonpartisan League’s history as valuable assets in her advocacy efforts.
She will be recognized alongside Gabe Brown on March 5 at the North Dakota Winter Show in Valley City.
