Fire prevention for ATV and UTV users

Fire prevention for ATV and UTV users

By Scout Nelson

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and utility-terrain vehicles (UTVs) are popular for both work and recreation across North Dakota. However, with the increased risk of fires in many areas, these vehicles can become fire hazards if not handled properly.

North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension, the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department, and the North Dakota Game and Fish Department are urging ATV and UTV owners to practice fire safety techniques to prevent wildfires.

“It only takes one spark to start a fire,” says Angie Johnson, NDSU Extension’s farm and ranch safety coordinator. “Whether driving in crop fields or parking in tall grass, taking precautions with these vehicles is essential for safety.”

To help reduce wildfire risks, all ATV and UTV operators are advised to prioritize fire safety during every ride, whether for agricultural work, hunting, or recreation. Tony Hillig from the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department emphasizes, “Stay on designated trails, follow fire restrictions, and keep your vehicle well-maintained to minimize wildfire risk.”

Greg Freeman of the North Dakota Game and Fish Department adds, “Check the fire danger index and county burn restrictions before heading out. If you see a fire risk, report it to the authorities immediately.”

To stay safe, avoid dragging chains or metal parts that can create sparks, maintain proper tire pressure, and keep exhaust pipes away from tall grass. Carrying a shovel, water, or a fire extinguisher is also recommended during high fire-risk conditions.

Lastly, regularly clean your vehicle to remove plant debris, as it can increase fire risk. Following these steps ensures a safer, more enjoyable experience with your ATV or UTV in North Dakota.
