Enhancing Farmer and Rancher Well-being: Exploring Worksite Programs

Farmers and ranchers across various regions are being invited to participate in a focus group interview aimed at investigating the potential benefits of worksite well-being programs. The primary objective of these programs is to effectively decrease stress levels and enhance overall well-being. Agriculture, like any industry, faces numerous challenges and changes. While some changes are expected, such as market price fluctuations, others, such as unpredictable weather patterns or unforeseen diseases, can significantly impact individuals involved in farming or ranching.

To better understand how these challenges affect the well-being of farmers and ranchers, Caroline Human, a doctoral student in Human Development and Family Science at North Dakota State University (DSU), is conducting research and seeking participants from diverse agricultural backgrounds.

The study aims to examine the relationship between the opportunities and constraints faced by farmers and ranchers in their daily operations and their overall well-being. By gaining insights into the unique stressors experienced in agricultural work, the research hopes to identify strategies to support physical health, social relationships, psychological well-being, and work adjustment for farmers and ranchers.

The focus group interviews will be conducted virtually using platforms such as Zoom. Each group will consist of six to ten participants who will be assigned pseudonyms to ensure privacy and anonymity. All identifying records and personal information will be kept confidential.

Before participating in the focus group, participants will be asked to complete a brief online questionnaire, which will gather demographic information and prompt reflection on specific topics to be discussed during the interview. These topics may include primary sources of strength or coping mechanisms utilized in the face of challenges.

To express interest in participating, individuals can reach out to Caroline Human via email at caroline.homan@ndsu.edu. As a token of gratitude, each participant will receive a $20 Amazon gift card upon completion of the study.

This study, conducted in collaboration with DSU Extension, aims to shed light on effective strategies and programs that can support farmers and ranchers in managing stress and enhancing overall well-being in the agricultural industry.
