June is Dairy Month, a time to recognize dairy farmers and celebrate the important role dairy foods play in healthy eating. Milk and dairy products provide many essential nutrients that support growth, development, and overall health for people of all ages.
Julie Garden-Robinson, Ph.D., R.D., L.R.D., North Dakota State University Extension food and nutrition specialist and professor in the Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences, highlighted that dairy milk provides high-quality protein, calcium, vitamin B12, riboflavin, phosphorus, and other important nutrients. Many milk products also contain added vitamins A and D, which help support bone health and other body functions.
Dairy choices can vary based on age, health needs, and personal preferences. Health experts recommend breast milk or infant formula for babies under age 1. From ages 1 to 2, full-fat dairy products are commonly recommended because fat supports growth and brain development. For older children and adults, low-fat, reduced-fat, or fat-free milk options can be included as part of a balanced diet.
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend three daily servings of dairy foods. While full-fat dairy can be part of a healthy eating pattern, consumers are encouraged to choose options that fit their overall nutrition and calorie needs.
Some people cannot consume regular dairy products because of lactose intolerance or milk allergies. People with lactose intolerance may experience digestive discomfort but may tolerate certain dairy foods such as yogurt or some cheeses. Those with milk allergies need to avoid dairy products due to possible serious reactions.
Consumers who choose plant-based milk alternatives, such as almond, oat, or rice beverages, should compare Nutrition Facts labels to understand their nutritional value.
Dairy Month also provides opportunities to enjoy dairy in creative ways. Families can prepare cheese boards, yogurt parfaits, creamy vegetable dips, overnight oats, and fruit smoothies using milk or yogurt.
