North Dakota’s top crops - leading agricultural value in 2022

By Scout Nelson

In the vast agricultural landscape of North Dakota, certain crops stand out for their economic contribution. Drawing on data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a recent analysis highlights the most valuable crops based on their annual production value as of July 16, 2022.

Agriculture is a cornerstone of North Dakota’s economy, despite farming and ranching accounting for just 1% of the U.S. GDP. The state is home to numerous family-run farms, which play a crucial role in feeding populations both domestically and internationally. Each farm supports an average of 166 people annually.

The diversity among farm operators is increasing, with more African Americans and Hispanic and Latino individuals running farms than ever before.

Notably, about 86% of all U.S. agricultural products are produced on family-owned farms, and nearly one in four farmers are relatively new to the field, with less than ten years of experience.

The list of valuable crops showcases North Dakota’s contribution to the nation's agriculture, emphasizing the importance of these crops in supporting the state’s economic fabric. As global demand for food continues to rise, the role of North Dakota’s farmers remains vital in meeting this need through significant exports, which were projected to reach a record $191.0 billion in 2022.

This focus on the state’s top crops not only underscores the economic importance of agriculture in North Dakota but also highlights the evolving demographic and economic contributions of its farmers.
