The National 4-H Congress recently hosted an empowering event in Atlanta, Georgia, attended by four exceptional youths from North Dakota: Alyssa Thomsen and Allison Brynn from Barnes County, Dylan Demmers from Cass County, and Mathea Nelson from Ramsey County. This event marked a pivotal moment in their 4-H journey, fostering leadership skills and community involvement.
Alyssa Thomsen, reflecting on her experience, highlighted the importance of leadership development and the joy of connecting with 4-H members nationwide. She emphasized the value of listening to diverse perspectives and participating in a community service project in Atlanta.
Allison Brynn shared similar sentiments, noting the impact of exchanging ideas with peers from different states and her plans to apply these insights to local 4-H activities, particularly in fostering inter-age group interactions and boosting participation in smaller counties.
Dylan Demmers expressed his gratitude for the unforgettable experiences and friendships formed at the congress, underscoring the significance of such gatherings in shaping young leaders.
Accompanying the delegates were Julie Hassebroek, a North Dakota Foundation Board member, and Leigh Ann Skurupey, assistant director of NDSU Extension 4-H Youth Development. Skurupey also contributed as a National 4-H Congress Board of Advisors member and program chair, observing firsthand the growth and confidence-building among the attendees.
The event, attended by over 800 youths, offered a variety of educational sessions and service-learning opportunities, all aimed at enhancing leadership capabilities and community impact. The North Dakota 4-H Foundation's support was instrumental in making this educational journey possible.
As preparations for the 2024 National 4-H Congress begin, interested delegates are encouraged to apply through the North Dakota State University Extension 4-H Youth Development by August 1, 2024.
