North Dakota Wheat Harvest Progresses Despite Delays

North Dakota Wheat Harvest Progresses Despite Delays

North Dakota producers experienced a mix of achievements and challenges this harvest season. The latest USDA Crop Progress report showcases that approximately two-thirds of the spring wheat crop is now harvested. This is a significant leap from the 38% recorded the previous week.

Despite hotter than usual temperatures and mostly dry spells throughout the week, harvest work was interrupted. Humidity and heavy dews resulted in shorter harvest days. By the weekend's close, a large portion of the state experienced rain, particularly from southwest to northeast.

Comparatively, Minnesota and Montana are ahead with 85% of their harvest completed, while South Dakota boasts a 97% completion rate.

When it comes to yield quality, many are pleasantly surprised. The wheat quality lab at NDSU has received a fraction of the expected samples, showing varying qualities. Protein levels appear a tad below average at 14%, but this could change with more samples. Most samples exhibit commendable test weights, but some indicate lower vitreous kernel counts.

North Dakota's durum harvest is halfway done, lagging behind the 62% average. Preliminary reports show satisfactory protein levels and robust test weights. The early crop's color quality is commendable, but the slow harvest and impending rain raise uncertainty about its consistency. Montana's harvest pace is brisk, with over 80% completion.
