Governor Armstrong Meets Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate to Strengthen Partnerships

By Scout Nelson

Governor Kelly Armstrong continued his pledge to strengthen tribal-state partnerships by meeting with the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate. The meeting was held at the Dakota Magic Casino convention center near Hankinson, where tribal leaders, elders, and community members welcomed him.

Armstrong emphasized the importance of collaboration between state and tribal governments, encouraging leaders to address challenges together rather than wait for federal action.

Chairman J. Garret Renville thanked the governor for visiting and underscored the value of open communication. He highlighted that cooperation does not always mean agreement but helps prevent repeating mistakes of the past.

The event included group discussions between tribal leaders, state agency officials, legislators, and other stakeholders. They explored solutions to issues such as education, health care, law enforcement jurisdiction, addiction recovery, corrections, and barriers faced by individuals re-entering society after incarceration.

Armstrong also held private discussions with the tribe’s executive leadership, focusing on gaming opportunities, community well-being, and strategies for long-term development.

The visit is part of a broader effort by the North Dakota Indian Affairs Commission, which is coordinating meetings between the new state administration and all five tribal nations in the state. Armstrong previously met with Turtle Mountain Band officials, and additional visits are planned.

The Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, based on the Lake Traverse Indian Reservation, have land primarily in northeastern South Dakota, with a small portion extending into southeastern North Dakota.
