North Dakota Faces Planting Delays for Corn, Soybeans, and Spring Wheat

According to the latest USDA Crop Progress report, planting of corn, soybeans, and spring wheat in North Dakota is significantly behind the average pace, in contrast to other states. The cold and wet spring in the Northern Plains, especially in North Dakota, has hindered planting progress. As of the report, corn planting stands at 5% (4% last year, 26% average), soybeans at 2% (2% last year, 15% average), and spring wheat at 20% (16% last year, 46% average).

The region experienced below-normal temperatures in May 2022, which delayed soil warming and slowed progress. However, this year's May temperatures have been above normal, aiding in soil warming and water absorption. While recent rainfall has added to soil moisture, the forecast for the remainder of May suggests above-normal temperatures and reduced precipitation, except for scattered showers in the coming days.

Despite the slower progress, there is optimism that conditions for planting will improve throughout the month. Significant delays similar to those experienced in 2022 are not expected, and it is unlikely that the prevent plant acreage seen last year will be repeated in 2023.
