New Peltier Institute Supports Ag Tech Education

New Peltier Institute Supports Ag Tech Education

By Scout Nelson

North Dakota State University has announced the launch of the Peltier Institute for Advancement in Agricultural Technology, an initiative designed to prepare future leaders in agriculture through education, research, and innovation.

The institute is supported by the NDSU Foundation, the College of Agriculture, Food Systems and Natural Resources, and the College of Engineering. A special medallion ceremony on September 29 honored newly endowed faculty positions and celebrated the first group of student scholars.

The Peltier Institute is named in honor of Joe and Norma Peltier, whose philanthropic commitment has made the vision possible. Their generosity ensures that the institute will support student scholarships, create interdisciplinary academic programs, and expand opportunities for research and outreach.

Dr. Xin (Rex) Sun has been appointed as the inaugural endowed chair, while Matthew Olhoft has been named Endowed Professor of Practice. Both leaders will guide the institute in integrating agriculture, engineering, data science, and artificial intelligence to address challenges in food production and sustainability.

“Dr. Sun brings a wealth of experience and a forward-thinking approach to this role,” said Greg Lardy, Joe and Norma Peltier Vice President for Agriculture. Sun emphasized that “when agriculture meets AI, the possibilities are endless,” highlighting the institute’s focus on innovation with global potential.

In addition, ten students have been named the first Peltier Scholars, a program designed to inspire the next generation of ag tech innovators. By exposing students to career opportunities in ag engineering and technology, the institute helps address workforce needs and supports the region’s agricultural future.

Olhoft noted that the program will provide students with access to the latest tools and knowledge, preparing them for success in modern agriculture. The Peltier Institute strengthens NDSU’s role as a leader in agricultural technology and education, while advancing research that benefits farmers, communities, and global food systems.
