NDSU Student Recognized for Research Excellence

By Scout Nelson

A student at North Dakota State University is gaining national recognition for her work in landscape architecture. Shima Goodarzi, a Master of Landscape Architecture student, has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Kenneth R. Brooks MLA Research Scholarship and CELA Conference Travel Fellowship. This achievement highlights her strong research skills and commitment to advancing the field of landscape architecture.

The scholarship is awarded by the Landscape Architecture Foundation and is considered highly competitive at the national level. It recognizes students who present outstanding research proposals that contribute to improving the practice of landscape architecture. Goodarzi’s work stands out for its focus on innovation and practical solutions.

Goodarzi earned her earlier degrees in architecture in Tehran, Iran. During her studies, she developed a strong interest in how built environments affect people’s lives. Her professional experience includes working on large urban and rural development projects that combine ecological and social needs. At North Dakota State University, she continues to build her knowledge of urban design, ecological systems, and sustainable planning.

Her current research explores the use of digital tools such as digital twins and performance modeling. These tools help improve both social and environmental outcomes in urban spaces. Her goal is to design cities that are resilient, fair, and environmentally responsible.

Goodarzi focuses on combining ideas from architecture, ecology, and community design. This interdisciplinary approach helps create solutions that benefit both people and the environment. Her work reflects the growing need for sustainable and thoughtful urban development.

“Ms. Goodarzi impressed our faculty and committee in a short period of time … Her ability to think critically, harness ideas and analyze with her sketchbook shows the skills necessary for visionary leadership deserving of support,” said Dominic L. Fischer, PLA, MLA, ASLA, chair and associate professor, Department of Landscape Architecture, Disaster Resilience and Emergency Management.

This recognition highlights the importance of research and innovation in shaping the future of landscape architecture.
