North Dakota State University (NDSU) has launched a multi-year effort to earn the Innovation and Economic Prosperity (IEP) designation from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU). This recognition highlights universities that support local economic growth through innovation, workforce training, and public service.
The IEP program helps institutions strengthen ties with industries, governments, and communities. It also offers access to strategies that boost regional economic engagement. By earning this designation, NDSU hopes to show its strong commitment to economic development and attract new funding, research opportunities, and collaborations.
NDSU joined the IEP program in late 2024, along with seven other universities. As part of the process, participating schools complete a self-study over up to three years to assess their impact on local economies.
Vice Provost Jeff Boyer and Director of Innovation and Economic Development Cindy Graffeo are leading NDSU’s journey through the program.
Graffeo shared, “For the remainder of the year, the IEP Designation Committee and the Office of Innovation and Economic Development will conduct an internal audit of all programs, initiatives and touchpoints the university has with industry partners.”
She added that students, staff, and community members might be asked to take part in surveys, interviews, or focus groups to shape future plans.
President David Cook emphasized the university’s broad reach: “With extension offices in 53 counties and seven Research Extension Centers in North Dakota that offer a testing ground for prototypes and a platform to serve and support citizens, NDSU’s economic impact reaches every county in North Dakota.”
NDSU’s full application will be submitted to the APLU in mid-2026. The university expects a final decision by early 2027. This effort reflects NDSU’s long-standing land-grant mission to serve and support communities across the state.
