NDSU Hosts 2026 Calving School

NDSU Hosts 2026 Calving School

By Scout Nelson

NDSU Extension is hosting its annual Calving School in Minot, North Dakota, to help cattle producers prepare for the upcoming calving season. The training takes place on January 23 at the North Central Research Extension Center. Producers can choose between two session times, making it easier to attend.

The program runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and again from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Both sessions offer the same lessons and include a meal. Registration is required to ensure enough food and materials are available. The cost to attend is $20.

The training focuses on important topics that support cow and calf health. Sessions cover maternal nutrition, proper vaccination, recordkeeping, and preparation of calving kits. Participants also take part in hands-on calving demonstrations that show safe methods for managing both normal and difficult births.

A cow-and-calf training model returns for this year’s program. This model helps simulate calving problems and allows participants to practice safe ways to assist cows during difficult deliveries. A new rotation schedule gives learners the chance to work through different calving scenarios.

The program is led by NDSU Extension specialists and local veterinarians who have strong experience in cattle care. These experts provide clear advice and practical tips that farmers can use right away on their operations.

One Extension agent shares that the workshop supports both experienced and new cattle producers.

“Whether you are well seasoned or new to calving cows, this workshop will provide you with tips, tools and hands-on activities to be better prepared for the upcoming calving season,” says Brummund.

The North Central Research Extension Center is located at 5400 Highway 83 South in Minot. Producers can register online or by phone. To register, visit ndsu.ag/calvingschool or call 701-857-6444.

This training supports better herd care, reduces health risks, and helps farmers prepare for a strong calving season. NDSU Extension continues to offer valuable learning programs that improve livestock health and farm success across North Dakota.
