NDSU Event Highlights Liquid Manure Fertilizer Benefits

NDSU Event Highlights Liquid Manure Fertilizer Benefits

By Scout Nelson

Crop producers are invited to attend a one day workshop focused on using liquid livestock manure as a fertilizer. The event takes place October 1 at North Dakota State University’s Carrington Research Extension Center. Registration and refreshments begin at 8:30 a.m., and the workshop concludes at 3 p.m. CDT.

Mary Keena, NDSU Extension livestock environmental management specialist, organizes the program and welcomes a lineup of experienced speakers who have researched and worked with liquid manure in cropping systems.

The morning session covers livestock development in North Dakota and the availability of liquid manure. Attendees will also learn state rules and regulations for manure application and compare commercial fertilizer, solid manure, and liquid manure to better understand their different functions.

Keena explains that understanding how these nutrient sources work is critical for correct use and improved soil health. Research from Minnesota and Ohio on using liquid swine manure and in-season applications on corn will be shared.

Participants will also learn about soil and manure sampling methods and how to read nutrient analysis results to maximize fertilizer value.

The day ends with an important discussion on safety and response to liquid manure spills. Keena emphasizes that proper training makes quick and correct responses second nature, protecting people, animals, and the environment.

Expert speakers include Amber Wood of the North Dakota Livestock Alliance, Chryseis Modderman and Melissa Wilson from the University of Minnesota Extension, Glen Arnold of Ohio State University Extension, Brady Goettl of NDSU Extension, and Kevin Erb from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

Lunch is sponsored by the North American Manure Expo Board. Registration is requested to ensure space and food for all participants, and continuing education units for certified crop advisers are pending approval.
