North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension is gearing up to host its annual calving school on Thursday, March 20, 2025. Scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the event will take place at the North Central Research Extension Center near Minot, North Dakota.
This workshop is tailored to both experienced and novice individuals involved in calving, providing them with essential knowledge and skills for the calving season.
The 2025 calving school agenda is packed with practical topics, including how to prepare for calving by assembling necessary supplies and recognizing the stages of calving. Participants will gain insights into what constitutes a normal delivery and how to handle abnormal births effectively. The school will also delve into optimizing animal nutrition during the critical periods of late gestation and early lactation, alongside best practices for newborn calf care and maintaining accurate records.
A notable addition to this year's program is the use of a cow and calf model. This innovative tool will offer attendees a unique opportunity to practice handling various calving complications, enhancing their ability to manage challenging scenarios that may arise during calving.
The session will be led by a team of experts including Lacey Quail, NDSU Extension livestock management specialist, and Kelly Schaefer from Schaefer Veterinary Service. NDSU Extension agents Paige Brummund and Kathryn Slavick will also facilitate bringing their local expertise to the table.
Paige Brummund sums up the value of the workshop, stating, “Whether you are well seasoned or new to calving cows, this workshop will provide you with tips, tools and hands-on activities to be better prepared for the upcoming calving season.”
Attendance at the calving school is free, and participants will be provided with lunch. However, registration is necessary to ensure adequate preparation for meals and materials. This event represents a pivotal learning opportunity for those involved in livestock management, aiming to boost their readiness and confidence for the upcoming calving season.
