Leaders and youth partner in 4-H event

By Scout Nelson

Several state representatives took part in a special 4-H livestock showmanship event on July 27 at the North Dakota State Fair in Minot. 4-H members trained the officials in the care and presentation of a variety of livestock species.

Every leader was matched with a young specialist who helped them understand the subtleties of cattle showmanship. The young people then evaluated the performance of their mentors.

Kurt Froelich, an NDSU Extension agent from Stark-Billings County, highlighted the event as a bridge between current and future leaders, appreciating the support that made this interaction possible.

Leigh Ann Skurupey, assistant director at the North Dakota Center for 4-H Youth Development, emphasized the program’s aim to nurture leadership, knowledge, and confidence in youth, preparing them for future challenges.

Participants included notable figures such as John Fjeldahl, Ward County Commissioner, who won first place in beef cattle showmanship, and Canadian Consul General Beth Richardson, who topped the meat goat's category. Other winners were Sarah Lovas in dairy cattle, Kandi Mikkelson in dairy goats, Lynette Flage in sheep, and Senator Keith Boehm in swine.

The event also saw participation from a variety of leaders including Drew Combs from the North Dakota Trade Office, U.S. Congressman Kelly Armstrong, and several state senators and representatives, all coached by 4-H members skilled in their respective livestock fields.

Chloe Drummond, a 4-H Foundation board coordinator, shared her enriching experience being coached by Tessa Sigvaldson, lauding the program’s impact on her understanding of balance and responsibility in both work and life.
