Grasslands Closed to Prevent Wildfires

Grasslands Closed to Prevent Wildfires

By Scout Nelson

A new emergency fire closure order has been issued for National Forest System lands located in the Little Missouri National Grasslands and Dakota Prairie Grasslands. This decision follows ongoing dry conditions that present a high risk of wildfires across parts of North Dakota.

The closure affects areas within Billings, Golden Valley, McKenzie, and Slope Counties. The restrictions are in place through May 15, unless lifted earlier. The goal of the order is to reduce the risk of wildfires and to safeguard natural resources and infrastructure.

“Anyone utilizing National Forest System Lands within Billings, Golden Valley, McKenzie and Slope Counties should take note of this recent order to protect lands, resources and facilities during this period of severe fire danger,” said Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring. “Even though the area has received some moisture, people need to be cautious as dry conditions persist.”

Under the emergency order, the following activities are temporarily restricted:

  • Building, maintaining, attending, or using any fire, including campfires and stove fires
  • Smoking on National Forest System lands
  • Using wheeled motor vehicles on non-surfaced National Forest System roads

There are specific exemptions outlined in the official order. Those planning to access these lands are encouraged to review the full order for detailed information.

This action underscores the importance of fire safety and responsible use of public lands during times of elevated risk. Visitors should remain alert and follow local guidelines to help prevent accidental fires.
