Free Webinars Support Mental Health in Agriculture

Free Webinars Support Mental Health in Agriculture

By Scout Nelson

North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension is offering a series of free suicide prevention webinars designed to help those working in agriculture and related industries recognize and respond to mental health concerns.

The program, called Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) training, aims to equip participants with practical tools to support individuals who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts or emotional distress.

Three sessions are scheduled for November 20 from 1 to 2:30 p.m., January 21 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and February 23 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Each 90-minute webinar focuses on the wellness needs of farmers, ranchers, and ag professionals, highlighting the importance of awareness and timely intervention.

Research shows that people working in agriculture face higher rates of stress and suicide compared to other professions. These webinars will help participants learn how to identify warning signs, ask the right questions, and connect individuals with professional help and community resources.

“Ongoing farm and ranch stress takes a toll on health, including mental and emotional well-being,” says NDSU Extension family science specialist Sean Brotherson. “We say, ‘Sometimes you need help and sometimes you are help.’”

The training sessions will be facilitated by NDSU Extension agents Katie Henry of Cavalier County, Jill Sokness of Cass County, and pesticide specialist Madeleine Smith.

Although the training is designed for those in agriculture, anyone interested in supporting mental health awareness can participate. Each webinar is limited to 30 participants and is supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
