North Dakota youth have another opportunity to begin their journey in the sheep industry through the Starter Flock Discounted Loan Program, offered by North Dakota State University (NDSU) Extension and the North Dakota Lamb and Wool Producers Association. Now in its 18th year, the program helps young people build their own sheep flocks while gaining valuable livestock and business experience.
Youth selected for the program receive an interest-free loan to purchase 10 yearling Rambouillet ewes. The North Dakota Lamb and Wool Producers Association purchases the ewes from the NDSU Hettinger Research Extension Center, helping reduce the initial cost for participants and making sheep production more accessible.
“It is tremendous to see young people get involved in the North Dakota sheep industry,” says Dave Pearson, shepherd at the center. “These Wyoming-bred ewes are a great opportunity to learn with less initial input costs and no interest.”
Each participant is paired with an experienced mentor who provides guidance on flock management, recordkeeping, and setting production goals. Youth may also choose their own mentor if they prefer. This support helps participants build confidence while learning practical sheep management skills.
“Sheep production offers youth an opportunity to grow a business, learn record keeping and manage finances,” says Chance Porsborg, a past recipient and starter flock program lead.
Since the program began, more than 150 young producers have participated and gained valuable experience in North Dakota’s sheep industry.
“More than 150 young producers have learned about sheep in North Dakota with this program,” says Travis Hoffman, NDSU and University of Minnesota Extension sheep specialist. “It has been exciting to see young sheep enthusiasts get a start by receiving 10 ewes with limited risk through this great loan program.”
Participants repay 70% of the value of the ewes. The first payment is due by Nov. 1 of the second year, with the remaining balance paid over the following two years. Applicants must be 10 to 18 years old by Aug. 1 of the application year.
