Florida Launches Loan Program for Farmers After Winter Storm

Florida Launches Loan Program for Farmers After Winter Storm

By Jamie Martin

Florida farmers and ranchers impacted by the recent winter storm now have access to interest-free loans under the Agriculture and Aquaculture Producers Natural Disaster Recovery Loan Program. The initiative aims to support farmers recovering from damages caused by extreme weather.

Commissioner Wilton Simpson emphasized the urgency of helping farmers rebuild. “Delivering immediate support to agricultural producers impacted by the recent winter storm, like our nursery growers in North Florida who were hit especially hard, is a critical first step to get them back on their feet,” he said.

Eligible farmers and aquaculture producers can apply for loans up to $500,000 to repair essential structures like fences, equipment, and greenhouses or to remove storm debris. Farmers are encouraged to document all damages and keep receipts for recovery expenses.

Producers who previously received disaster relief funds for hurricane damage may still qualify for assistance. However, restrictions limit applicants to one loan per storm, two per year, and five within three years.

The loan program was funded through House Bill 1-C, which allocated $75 million for agricultural disaster relief. Simpson plans to advocate for additional funding to expand the program further.

Farmers can find details on the application process on the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) website.
