NDSU's Essential Sheep Care Workshop

NDSU's Essential Sheep Care Workshop

By Scout Nelson

North Dakota State University Extension is set to host an enlightening lambing workshop on February 22 in Tappen, North Dakota, aimed at enhancing sheep production knowledge for both new and seasoned shepherds.

The event will start at 10 a.m. at Tappen City Hall, featuring an array of expert speakers and concluding with practical demonstrations.

“This workshop will focus on providing resources and education to sheep producers wanting to optimize their lambing management,” notes Travis Hoffman, a renowned sheep specialist with NDSU and the University of Minnesota Extension.

Participants can look forward to a packed agenda, beginning with presentations on key topics such as baby lamb management, record keeping, and lamb weaning considerations. A highlight will be the 2025 lamb market update presented by Hoffman himself, providing valuable insights into future market conditions.

The afternoon session promises an interactive experience with live demonstrations and a barn tour on a local farm, which will showcase on-site lambing barn management practices. Another practical session will cover ewe body condition scoring and hoof health and care, essential for maintaining a healthy flock.

The clinic is tailored to support shepherds in managing the crucial lambing season effectively, with tips on everything from nutrition to general flock health. With a nominal fee of $10 for adults and free attendance for youth, the workshop is not only educational but also accessible.

The event also provides a unique networking opportunity for producers to connect and share experiences, fostering a community of learning and mutual support in the sheep industry. For those interested, pre-registration is recommended to facilitate meal planning and adapt to any weather-related changes.

For more details or to RSVP, interested parties can contact Monica Fitterer, the Extension agent for Kidder County. Join fellow agricultural enthusiasts and elevate your sheep production expertise at this not-to-be-missed event.
