Flooded Land Aid for North Dakota Farmers

Flooded Land Aid for North Dakota Farmers

By Scout Nelson

The Natural Resources Conservation Service introduces funding support for landowners in North Dakota through the Water Bank Program for Fiscal Year 2026. This program focuses on helping farmers manage flooded lands while improving environmental conditions and supporting long-term land use.

The Water Bank Program aims to protect and improve wetlands, which play an important role in supporting wildlife and maintaining natural ecosystems. These wetlands provide habitat for migratory birds and other species while also helping to control flooding and reduce soil erosion. In addition, the program supports better water quality and improves moisture levels in the soil.

Eligible landowners can receive annual payments based on the type of land enrolled. Cropland receives $50 per acre, pastureland, including non-cropped wetlands receives $35 per acre, and forestland receives $20 per acre. These payments are part of a 10-year rental agreement, which is not renewable.

The program ranks applications based on land priority. Cropland affected by flooding is given the highest priority. Pasture, hay, and rangeland fall under medium priority, while forestland and other areas receive lower priority. This system helps ensure that the most affected lands receive support first.

Landowners with flooding issues on cropland, pastureland, hayland, rangeland, or forestland are encouraged to apply. The application period provides a clear window for participation, allowing farmers to plan ahead and take advantage of available funding.

By supporting wetland conservation and improving land management, the program helps farmers protect their land while also benefiting the environment. It offers a practical solution for dealing with flooding challenges and promotes sustainable agriculture practices.

Landowners impacted by flooding on cropland, pastureland, hayland, rangeland, forestland, and other lands are encouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted April 15, 2026, to May 15, 2026. For more information, please contact your local service center.
