The Albert Ekre Grassland Preserve in Walcott, North Dakota, will host a free educational event on September 30, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Central Time. The gathering is designed to highlight the purpose of the Ekre Preserve and showcase the many research projects conducted there over the years.
It also provides an opportunity for researchers, land managers, and community members to connect around shared interests in prairie conservation and applied science.
The agenda features a range of topics led by experts. Kevin Sedivec will open the event with background information on the preserve, range research, and grazing systems.
Shawn DeKeyser will present on prairie and wetland restoration and how these efforts can increase forage production. Annie Bahe will share updates on chemical trials aimed at controlling leafy spurge and invasive cool season grasses.
Research on livestock is also part of the program. Garrett Havelka will discuss studies on the NDSU beef herd and hormone detection. Jacob Vandress will present findings from his research on the fringed orchid, while Ben Menapace will cover riparian improvement through cattle grazing.
Wildlife and ecological studies are also featured. Trebor Hall will highlight native bee surveys, and Dillon Fogarty will discuss research on fire and woody encroachment.
Lunch will be provided by Alsager Meats, giving participants time to relax and network. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., with presentations continuing throughout the day.
The event offers valuable insights into how research at the Ekre Preserve supports prairie health, livestock production, and wildlife conservation. By bringing together different groups, the event encourages collaboration and promotes better management of grassland ecosystems.
