The last Human Progress and Flourishing Workshop of the spring is scheduled for April 22 at 10 a.m. in Beckwith Recital Hall. Abigail Deveraux, associate professor of economics and research fellow at the Institute for the Study of Economic Growth at Wichita State University, is set to present "The Clarke's Law Gap: How Magical Innovation Outpaces Regulation."
All members of the NDSU community and the public are invited to attend the free event. After the presentation, food and refreshments will be served in the Challey School of Music Atrium.
Devereaux researches a number of theoretical and applied concepts related to economic growth, including the theory of technological innovation.
Her talk will introduce three laws credited to science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke about "the limits of knowledge and, ultimately, control, as scientists and creators venture into the vast and radically uncertain unknown." She will discuss the limits of effective control and explain the implications for innovation and growth.
Deveraux received her doctorate in economics from George Mason University, where she received the 2020 Israel Kirzner award for the best economics dissertation. Prior to re-entering academia, she worked for seven years as a technical project manager at Wolfram Research and helped run their complex systems summer school.
The Human Progress and Flourishing Workshop is hosted by the Challey Institute for Global Innovation and Growth. It invites internationally-renowned scholars from universities across the country to present their research and engage with the NDSU community.
The series will return in fall 2022.
