Climate Change Impacts US Wetlands

Climate Change Impacts US Wetlands

By Scout Nelson

Two major concerns are drawing national attention in agriculture—wetland loss and rising farm debt. Scientists and economists say both pose serious risks to farming communities, water health, and the rural economy.

Dr. Owen McKenna of the U.S. Geological Survey highlights the role of prairie-pothole wetlands in North Dakota. These small water bodies are essential for supporting wildlife, improving water quality, and storing carbon. They also help in managing flood risks and ensuring long-term climate resilience. However, these wetlands are threatened by climate change and land-use shifts like increased farming and development. Dr. McKenna stresses that tools like remote sensing help scientists track changes and inform better land management decisions.

At the same time, farmers across the U.S. are facing growing financial stress. Reports from Harvest Public Media show that many farmers are dealing with higher debt levels due to falling crop prices and rising costs for seeds, fuel, and fertilizers. This trend started last year and is expected to worsen in 2025. Trade uncertainties, especially related to tariffs, are adding pressure on farm income.

Together, these issues reflect the wider challenges in today’s agricultural sector. The loss of wetlands not only impacts biodiversity and water safety but also weakens climate defenses. Meanwhile, increased debt may reduce investment in sustainable practices, trapping farmers in a cycle of financial hardship.

To move forward, experts recommend integrated solutions that protect natural resources while supporting farmers financially. This dual approach could help ensure food security, preserve ecosystems, and strengthen rural economies in the face of growing challenges.
