Apply Now for ND Housing Funds

By Scout Nelson

The North Dakota Housing Finance Agency (NDHFA) is now accepting applications for several programs aimed at expanding affordable housing across the state. These programs include the federal HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME), Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC), National Housing Trust Fund (HTF), and the state’s Housing Incentive Fund (HIF).

“The goal is to strengthen communities by addressing housing challenges,” said NDHFA Executive Director Brandon Dettlaff. “By expanding access to affordable housing for low-wage workers, the aging population, individuals with disabilities, and those facing or at risk of homelessness, we can further community growth.”

Each program offers funding for different types of housing support:

  • HOME Program: Provides $1.3 million to support housing development, homeownership, and rental assistance for low-income families.
  • LIHTC: Offers about $3.4 million in federal tax credits to developers who build or renovate rental housing for low-income tenants.
  • HTF: Allocates $3.7 million for extremely low-income housing projects, including those for people who are homeless.
  • HIF: With $20 million in funding from the state legislature, this program helps close financing gaps to support multifamily housing in both urban and rural areas.

Applications for these programs are highly competitive. Projects will be selected based on need, cost-effectiveness, and overall impact. Only top-scoring proposals will receive conditional funding commitments from the NDHFA.

The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. CDT on September 30, 2025. More details and guidance for applicants can be found on the NDHFA website or by contacting the Community Housing and Grants Management Division.

NDHFA is a self-funded state agency overseen by the North Dakota Industrial Commission, which includes Governor Kelly Armstrong, Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring, and Attorney General Drew Wrigley. The agency is committed to making housing affordable for all North Dakotans.
