Most N.D. Crop Development Well Behind Average

For the week ending Sunday, there were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 1 percent very short, 15 short, 69 adequate, and 15 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 2 percent very short, 16 short, 70 adequate, and 12 surplus.

Soybean condition rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 29 fair, 59 good, and 6 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 49 percent, well behind 83 last year and 70 for the five-year average. Setting pods was 1 percent, well behind 40 last year and 25 average.

Spring wheat condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 18 fair, 66 good, and 14 excellent. Spring wheat headed was 93 percent, near 97 last year, and equal to average. Coloring was 25 percent, well behind 51 last year, and behind 44 average.

Durum wheat condition rated 0 percent very poor, 5 poor, 22 fair, 63 good, and 10 excellent. Durum wheat headed was 88 percent, behind 97 last year, but ahead of 80 average. Coloring was 9 percent, well behind 45 last year and 30 average.

Winter wheat condition rated 1 percent very poor, 6 poor, 20 fair, 61 good, and 12 excellent. Winter wheat coloring was 66 percent, well behind 89 last year, and behind 80 average. Mature was 15 percent, well behind 42 last year.

Corn condition rated 0 percent very poor, 4 poor, 19 fair, 65 good, and 12 excellent. Corn silking was 10 percent, well behind 59 last year and 32 average.

Canola condition rated 1 percent very poor, 7 poor, 25 fair, 57 good, and 10 excellent. Canola blooming was 98 percent. Coloring was 6 percent, well behind 37 last year and 28 average.

Sugarbeet condition rated 0 percent very poor, 1 poor, 5 fair, 15 good, and 79 excellent.

Oats condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 19 fair, 61 good, and 18 excellent. Oats headed was 87 percent, behind 95 last year and 92 average. Coloring was 11 percent, well behind 50 both last year and average.

Barley condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 15 fair, 70 good, and 13 excellent. Barley headed was 93 percent, behind 98 last year, and near 94 average. Coloring was 29 percent, well behind 63 last year and 55 average.

Dry edible peas condition rated 0 percent very poor, 4 poor, 19 fair, 70 good, and 7 excellent. Dry edible peas blooming was 91 percent, behind 96 last year. Dropping leaves was 13 percent, well behind 44 last year. Sunflower condition rated 0 percent very poor, 3 poor, 19 fair, 72 good, and 6 excellent. Sunflowers blooming was 12 percent, behind 26 last year, and near 14 average.

Flaxseed condition rated 0 percent very poor, 4 poor, 22 fair, 70 good, and 4 excellent. Flaxseed blooming was 88 percent, near 89 last year, and equal to average. Coloring was 2 percent, well behind 24 last year.

Potato condition rated 0 percent very poor, 0 poor, 21 fair, 65 good, and 14 excellent. Potatoes blooming was 93 percent, near 92 last year, and ahead of 85 average. Rows closed was 52 percent, behind 58 last year, but ahead of 42 average.

Dry edible bean condition rated 0 percent very poor, 2 poor, 22 fair, 64 good, and 12 excellent. Dry edible beans blooming was 68 percent, behind 80 last year, but ahead of 63 average. Setting pods was 14 percent, behind 32 last year.

Alfalfa condition rated 1 percent very poor, 7 poor, 24 fair, 50 good, and 18 excellent. Alfalfa first cutting was 85 percent, behind 95 last year. Second cutting was 5 percent, behind 24 last year.

Pasture and range conditions rated 1 percent very poor, 5 poor, 22 fair, 58 good, and 14 excellent.

Stock water supplies rated 0 percent very short, 6 short, 82 adequate, and 12 surplus.
