Produced Water Spill Reported in Burke County
North Dakota Ag Connection - 12/03/2019

The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality (NDDEQ) reported Monday it has been notified of a produced water spill caused by a leak in an abandoned disposal well at the Lignite Gas Plant in Burke County. The gas plant is operated by Steel Reef, LLC.

The incident occurred about a mile east of Lignite on Nov, 24, and it was reported the same day.

Produced water is a byproduct of oil and gas development.

At the time the spill was reported, the volume released was unknown. However, recent calculations performed by Steel Reef estimate that approximately 1,980 barrels of produced water were released, impacting agricultural land.

Personnel from the NDDEQ are inspecting the site and will continue to monitor the investigation and remediation.
