North Dakota Sees Growth in Wind Energy

By Scout Nelson

Information shared by the Wind Industry of North Dakota during a presentation to the Legislature’s interim Energy Development and Transmission Committee highlights the continued growth of wind energy across the state. North Dakota’s “all of the above” energy policy supports this expansion, helping increase electricity production while also creating economic benefits for rural communities and landowners.

During a meeting with the Legislature’s interim Energy Development and Transmission Committee, Wind Industry of North Dakota representative Levi Andrist shared key updates about the industry’s progress. He explained that wind energy now provides a large share of electricity produced in the state.

"Thirty five point eight percent of all electricity produced in the state comes from wind projects," Wind Industry of North Dakota representative Levi Andrist told the Legislature's interim Energy Development and Transmission Committee. "That's the number eight state in the country."

Andrist said the state currently has 4,500 megawatts of wind capacity, placing North Dakota among leading states for wind energy development. He noted that wind projects continue to expand across many regions, with 52 projects operating in 28 counties.

"That's 22nd in the country," said Andrist.

The wind industry also contributes to significant economic value. Investments in wind projects have reached more than $10 billion, supporting construction, maintenance, and local economic activity.

"To date, more than $10 billion of capital has been invested in North Dakota," Andrist said. "Annually, $26.2 million has been generated for state and local taxes."

In addition to tax revenue, wind energy provides direct financial benefits to rural landowners. Lease payments from wind projects generate extra income for farmers, ranchers, and other property owners.

Additionally, Andrist told the committee $28 million is generated in land lease payments to farmers, ranchers and other landowners.

Overall, North Dakota’s wind energy growth shows how renewable energy development can support electricity production, rural economies, and long-term investment while contributing to the state’s diverse energy strategy.
